This baked BBQ tofu can make anyone fall in love with tofu! Crispy on the outside, chewy, spicy, it’s the ideal add-in to salads, sandwiches and meal prep boxes. Gluten-free, oil-free, super easy.

Tips to make baked tofu taste good

*It’s not a mystery that tofu by itself is pretty bland. The texture is also off-putting to many people – but I would never recommend eating plain tofu to anyone! There are certain tips you need to keep in mind to make incredible tofu every time:

*Press the tofu if necessary! You may not need to do this if using extra firm tofu, which is my usual go-to variety. But if using normal firm tofu, cover it with a paper towel and put something heavy on top of it for around 30 minutes to get rid of the liquid.

*Sauces/marinades are your BFFLs. This is a pretty straight-forward point, but a good sauce or marinade is THE thing that will take your tofu to the next level. Experiment with different flavors and ingredients to discover your personal favorite.

*The longer you marinade it, the better. At least 30 minutes, but overnight is even better.

*Don’t use too much sauce. This will cause soggy tofu – a big no-no. A thin layer on each piece is ideal. But, you can use any leftovers as a sauce.

Make the pieces around 1/3-1/2 inch in thickness. This will allow them to absorb enough flavor all the way through without burning.

INGREDIENTS

·       1 package organic firm tofu

·       1 tbsp coconut oil

·       sea salt and pepper, for seasoning

·       Garlic powder, for seasoning

·       1/4 cup Stubbs no sugar added BBQ sauce

DIRECTIONS

1. Press tofu for at least 30-45 minutes.

2. Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat. Slice tofu into about 32 rectangles (or as many as you desire).

3. Add 1 tbsp of oil to the skillet and then carefully add the tofu. Be careful as the oil can splatter. Spread tofu out into a single layer, season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and fry for about 5 minutes over medium-high heat. (Tediously) flip each piece of tofu (a couple forks works for me) and fry for another 5-6 minutes, or until golden all over and charred in some spots. I like to cook it until it’s nice and crisp.

4. Remove from heat and stir in the BBQ sauce to coat the tofu. Serve immediately with more sauce on the side if desired.
